Ken (Kenawari) left his village in the Niger Delta region many years ago, carrying with him emotional scars. However, he did make a life for himself in the city and built a reputation as a slick troubleshooter in inter-village disputes, of which there were many. He was one of the best operators on the books of the private security firm he worked for. Then it happened. There was trouble in his tribal home. Reluctantly he agreed to return. Not only has he got to settle a dispute that resulted in kidnapping, and tread gingerly through the political minefield of the region - including local robber barons, but he also has to face the most fearsome obstacles of all - his past. Blood Contract is not just an adventure set in the dangerous swamps of the Niger Delta, it is also the story of a man who is imperfect and must finally find some reconciliation with his past. Most of all, Biola Olatunde provides the reader with a vivid social commentary of the lives and challenges of those who live in this most neglected of corners of the earth.

Blood Contract Biola Olatunde 9781925148435 Books

I really enjoyed Biola’s book Blood Contract and recommend others read it. It kept me intrigued and wanting to read more. As someone who knows nothing about the Niger Delta, I found this book to be very informative of the land, culture, and societal problems. Blood Contract deals with issues of corruption, greed, evil, rape, oil bunkering, family, societal norms, God and poverty, just to name a few. I am now more informed of the Niger Delta, the damage of oil bunkering, the corruption of young boys and men, and the suffering that exists in that part of the world. I also found Biola’s writing to be inspiring and I look forward to reading her other books as well.

Blood Contract Biola Olatunde 9781925148435 Books Reviews

I had the privilege of reading Biola's novel before it was published. It is a short piece but excellent reading - it is, superficially, a modern-day adventure novel set in the Niger Delta of Nigeria, but that is where superficiality ceases. The main character (Ken) is a flawed man, but nevertheless strong with the sense of right, and more importantly, the multitude of interesting characters and plot twists all paint a vivid picture of the trials and tribulations of living in this most neglected part of the world. It is a social commentary, wrapped in fiction.

Well done Biola, and may your novel be a success - it deserves it!
Biola Olatunde's novel Blood Contract gives us an insight into the world of the Niger Delta and its people, through the eyes of the hero Kenewari, who is asked to go back to his home after many years away to negotiate the release of a captive.

The bewildering story is set in a vicious circle of hostage taking, bribery and corruption, blood contracts, ritual murder, tribal beliefs, superstitions and armed bands of thugs, fishing, local gin used as currency in marriage and oil bunkering, creating a world as far removed from the western world as the Earth is from the Moon.

The dialogue between the protagonists is written as the people in the Delta area of Nigeria speak, making it a little incomprehensible to the average western reader. But putting that aside, the story itself is intriguing and compelling to say the least.

It is not very often that the western world gets to read a novel about an African country written by an African author. This was a first for me. I must congratulate Biola Olatunde for allowing me this brief glimpse into her world.
I found that the culture of the Niger Delta has the same problems as does the rest of the world. The approach to solving those problems creates a wonderful tale of intrigue and suspense with characters that came to life yet did not overwhelm you and detract from the story. I found I had to finish it, forsaking normal duties such as sleep until it was done.
Having spent a small amount of time in the Niger Delta, I can see that this story is based on true life. I wish I had read this novel before I ventured there - or maybe I wouldn't have gone? The author brings the location to life, with interesting characters and a strong plot, if a tad hard to follow at times. I kept changing my mind who were the good guys and who the bad, but perhaps that was deliberate! A thought provoking and entertaining read.
Biola Olatunde is a writer with the uncanny ability to take her Western readers into a society we have little knowledge of and make it interesting and exciting. With a bit of a boast from the author we find ourselves in the muddy waters and swamps of Niger Delta where existence moves at a much different pace. Their values are not what we expect. Her novel Blood Contact, is well written and tightly plotted so the reader can experience the activity without boring explanations.

Her main character Ken (Kenawari) has returned to his native village as a negotiator attempting to facilitate the rescue of a hostage. Fleeing his home years ago, Ken has become a modern man, even married a white woman, his people no longer recognize him as one of their own. His father doesn't seem to have much use for him, and it is apparent, he is likely in danger himself from his past deeds.
This is an entertaining story and educational too. It was fascinating delving into the politics, customs and view-points of the people in a region of the world I'm unfamiliar with. It's like an alien landscape but at the same time, it is also familiar.

Following Ken on his troubled journey home, with his unique blend of the old and new traditions, makes it easier for us to identify with. The excitement comes from his negotiation work in an area of the world that is violent and hostile for the unwary, and in his deep and troubled past with his family and his tribe. Good stuff and a good read. Excellent work.
